August 2002
To Rodger and Sue
Early morning the Savannahlander starts a magic journey
from the East coast to the Gulf, with so much to see
To Stoney Creek and Kuranda, we are now on the way
with driver information and Tea - Stops, to make up the day.
The first part of rail travel ended at Almaden Station
then on the road to Chillagoe, for some local information
from the old smelters to the enthralling limestone caves
and Rodgers informative tour of a marble mine, had us in raves.
Next morning we’re up early around sunrise
for the next stage of our rail journey to Mount Surprise.
With a Billy tea stop, somewhere in the scrub
reach our rail stop near an old Heritage pub.
Continuing by road, we see many places and things
To Tallaroo for an afternoon bathe, in mineral springs.
Stopping at Burke and Wills last camp near Normanton.
To Karumba – now the first half of our trip is done.
From Karumba point we enjoyed a sunset boat trip.
Where crocodiles lay, as prawns and mullet do their flip.
The Gulflander trip out of Normanton, took us back in time
A Journey rich in history, on the original line.
We arrive at Cobbold Gorge, on leaving Georgetown,
To climb to the top and witness, the magic way down
A place where pioneer John Corbett lays at rest
A place where Tourists, can see nature at it’s best.
On seeing so much on this station called Robin Hood
We had no hesitation to stay, in surroundings so good.
The final day we arrive at the Lava Tubes of Undarra plains
To learn of the volcanic eruptions, and what remains
Then sadly leaving to travel, to the end of our tour
Through Atherton and winding Highway – who could want more.
There are many to thank, but to many to mention
For the welfare of us all, was always their intention
Our needs were noted, and mostly understood
May the rest of our days, be equally as good.

August 2002
To Rodger and Sue
We’ve seen fields of cane and crocodiles too
From Cairns to Karumba – there are lots to do
And I say to myself – what company I’ve had
On returning to Cairns with feelings happy but sad
In this troubled world with tension of all sorts
Your Company and Kindness will be forever in my thoughts
May the sun shine with warmth upon your face
And may the Lord hold you in his fond embrace
